View fullsize If you’ve been laid off or are looking for a new job, this is a hard time—and companies are still hiring. Here are my top three tips to navigate your search right now, as featured in @theouai. ✴️ When considering your next job, think through what you loved about your last role and what you didn’t. This is your chance to find a role that brings you new learning and hopefully leverages your strengths. ✴️ Reach out to other people for support, whether friends or family, mentors, or people who have been helpful to your career. Everyone experiences difficult moments in their careers and lives. You don’t have to do this alone. ✴️ Make time to care for yourself. There are many stresses related to living through this experience. Prioritize your mental and physical health in addition to problem-solving for next steps. View fullsize 𝚁𝚎𝚍𝚒𝚜𝚌𝚘𝚟𝚎𝚛 𝚈𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝙿𝚞𝚛𝚙𝚘𝚜𝚎 𝙰𝚝 𝚆𝚘𝚛𝚔 There’s a lot going on right now. We’re living through multiple crises. You may be feeling like you’re not sure how to move forward at work. Or you may be experiencing mixed feelings about your work or your workplace. When you’re stuck in survival mode, it can be hard to feel like the best version of yourself. Finding meaning at work is important for your motivation, and also your mental health. Several of you have reached out to me to share that you’re not finding fulfillment in what you’re doing. Even if your work doesn’t feel like it has significance, you do. It’s so important to me to help you lead yourself and others, especially through times of challenge. When I talk about rediscovering your purpose, I want to clarify that I’m not talking about finding your passion at work; this is about reminding yourself of how to find meaning in what you do. View fullsize Be Yourself Boldly means using your voice for justice. What is happening to the African-American community affects all of us. I am often known to say: Let’s walk into the discomfort and get comfortable together. This may feel uncomfortable. You might not know what to say. That is privilege. This is all sadly not new. There have been many times before when things like this have happened, when we as white people have been called to do more. We have not done enough. I have not done enough. Let us make this the moment when that begins to change. I will use my platform to speak up and I will listen more deeply when others speak about their experiences that I do not know personally. I don’t have all the answers and I will not get this right every time. I will continue to do my best and I will seek candid feedback when that best is not enough. To make progress, you have to do the work and follow through. Here’s what I am doing and learning right now and I invite you to join me. 📍Read about anti-racism. Start with a Google search and then buy books by African-American educators. Learn about the work that is being done and how you can be a part of it. I ordered How to be an AntiRacist by Dr. Ibrahim Kendi. It’s sold out on Amazon and B&N, but I found it at @bookpeople , an independent bookstore in TX. 📍Diversify your social and follow people of color to get broader perspectives in your daily lives. Amplify and elevate their messages. Some people I recommend: @rachel.cargle @lightwatkins @wkamaubell @vanjones68. 📍Donate what you can to financially advance this work. My family and I chose to support the @mnfreedomfund and the George Floyd Memorial Fund. 📍Move to action: sign petitions, call representatives, write letters, vote. Saying we don’t support racism isn’t enough. This will take confronting hard truths about the systems that make this possible. 📍Check in on your community. Call or text your African-American friends to let them know you see them, you’re there for them and you’ll be there to listen, if/when they want to talk. Do not expect a response. View fullsize Episode 9. It’s not always true the faster you go, the quicker you get somewhere. Sometimes things are only meaningful when you pause to acknowledge why you’re working on them in the first place. Research shows rest has many benefits to your physical and mental health, including increasing your creativity, motivation, and ability to make decisions, as well as decrease your stress level. At some point, it’s not worth it to keep pushing. It may seem counterintuitive, but pausing can give you the focus and strength to keep going. To make your rest more productive, set some guidelines: 1️⃣Clearly define what “rest” means to you. 2️⃣Specify what your timeline is. 3️⃣When you are ready to get back to your work, invite others to help you stay accountable to your goals.
